The Hungarian Dairy Research Institute Ltd. (Magyar Tejgazdasági Kísérleti Intézet Kft., MTKI) has been an active participant in the Hungarian food industry since its foundation in 1903. MTKI began working on the development of so-called functional foods as early as the 1960s, at a time when functional products were still largely unknown. In Hungary, MTKI was the first to conduct scientific research aimed at identifying the differences between probiotic lactic acid bacteria and traditional lactic acid bacteria. The first successes in this field were achieved through the identification of probiotic bacterial strains with exceptional properties.

From the mid-2000s, the Institute has been present on the Hungarian market as the manufacturer of the Bonolact® product family, which is based on the proper application of probiotic bacteria. This product range includes dietary supplements containing live cultures.
